Fort Hamby Park is located on the north side of W. Kerr Scott Reservoir in western North Carolina.

Constructed in the beautiful Yadkin River Valley, the lake offers extensive opportunities for outdoor recreational activities.

The campground offers a thick canopy of forest on one side and the scenic lake shore on the other. There are 32 campsites available, all with electric hookups, and one large group site that can accommodate up to 100 guests. Modern amenities like flush toilets, drinking water and showers create a comfortable camping experience, while a playground, sandy beach, basketball court and horseshoe pit provide additional recreation opportunities.

Notifications and Alerts

  • Please ensure you have a gate code prior to your arrival to the gate house. Gate codes are distributed by email when you create your reservation. Guests may be required to self-check in.

  • Please be aware that the Fort Hamby Campground's lower roadway is CLOSED. Follow directional signs in the campground, drive slowly, and use caution.

Need to Know

  • For Campground side only:

    Check out time is 12pm. Check in time 3pm or after. Assisted check in 3pm-6pm. If no attendant is in the gatehouse, Guests will self-check in using the gate code emailed to them at the point the reservation is made.

    PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LAST SELECTED DATE ON CALENDAR IS YOUR DEPARTURE DATE!

  • ATTENTION: Gatehouse will not make changes to your reservation.

    All reservations, changes, and cancellations must be made by the guest using Recreation.gov, by calling 877-444-6777, or using the Recreation.gov moblie app.

    The gate code will be delivered to the email address associated with the reservation.

    Highly recommend downloading the recreation.gov moblie app from the recreation.gov website prior to arriving at the campground.

  • Frequently asked Rules and Regulations:

    Maximun stay is 14 days within any 30 day period. Changing names on a reservation, changing campsites, or making multiple reservations in order to stay over 14 days is prohibitied.

    Golden Age/Access and America the Beautiful Interagency Senior and Access Passes are accepted at this campground. Cardholders receive a 50% discount on camping fees. Cardholder must be present at of check in, show pass and ID, and camp during the entire stay.

    Alcoholic beverages and off-road (golf carts, 4-wheelers, etc.) are prohibited.

    Camping is permitted in designated campsites only, and only permitted to those who have a reservation. Most campsites have a gravel bases: bring padding for tents. All equipment much be placed within site perimeter.

    Quiet hours are from 10pm. to 6am. Generators and music must be cut off at 10pm.

    Campers/Customers should not have packages delivered to the Park.

  • For Day Use Side of Park to include Shelters Reservations:

    The shelter reservation fee does NOT include the $5 day use fee. This fee is to be paid at the kiosk at the entrance to day use area (near gatehouse). The receipt from the kisok is to be placed on the dash of the car as proof of payment.

    The playground and volleyball court are not included in your reservation. Those areas area avaiable to all day users.

    Park only in designated areas. Parking at the shelter is not guaranteed. Carpooling is highly recommonded.

Natural Features

The gentle Yadkin River flows through its scenic namesake valley in the foothills of the eastern Blue Ridge Mountains. Forests of mixed hardwoods, including sycamore, poplar, oak and hickory, cover the region. Wildlife is abundant in the valley. White-tailed deer, black bear, eastern cottontails and more can be found among the hills. Birds in the area include wild turkey, woodpeckers, Carolina chickadees, red-eyed vireo, ovenbirds, mallards and wood ducks.

Recreation

The 1,475-acre reservoir offers excellent boating, canoeing, kayaking and swimming opportunities. Anglers will find channel catfish, large and smallmouth bass, bluegill, threadfin shad, spotted bass, striped bass, and hybrid striped bass. Miles of multi-trails, that allow hiking and mountain biking, surround the lake, including the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. An additional 25 miles of trails can be found at the Warrior Creek and Dark Mountain areas.

Driving Directions

From Winston-Salem, North Carolina, take Highway 421 North (approximately 61 miles) and turn left onto S. Recreation Road. Continue for approximately 1.5 miles. Campground entrance is located at the end of the road. From Charlotte, North Carolina, take I-77 North (approximately 60 miles) before merging onto Highway 421 North towards Wilkesboro/Boone, continue to S. Recreation Road (approximately 28 miles), turn left onto S. Recreation Road and go approximately 1.5 miles. Campground entrance is located at the end of the road. Travel times from:Winston Salem: 1 hour Charlotte: 1.5 hours
