What’s Included

Can I be honest with you? Art history can sometimes be boring for kids. There, I said it. Teaching about artists and cultures doesn’t have to be a snoozer, though!

I’ve designed 3 different ways for students to attempt these modern Black artist-inspired projects. All will engage kids to create! Choose which way works best for your classes:

  • Roll a dice games to add randomness to your student’s artwork
  • “You Pick” art worksheets for kids to choose their own elements
  • Digital spinner wheels, so kids can randomly pick elements and you can integrate technology in the art room
  • Printable dice template in case you have no dice
  • Step-by-step picture directions to guide students through the art process
  • Drawing practice worksheets, for kids who want to sketch out their ideas
  • Artist biographies leveled for both elementary and middle school students accordingly, so you don’t need to research
  • “Big Ideas” reflection worksheets where students write about their art process
  • Art rubrics, self-assessment tools to get students thinking about things like craftsmanship and art project goals
  • “I CAN” Statements aligned to the Studio Habits of Mind to use during instruction or post on your bulletin board
  • Art exit tickets with quick, thought-provoking prompts
  • Art history coloring page to keep kids inspired by these modern Black artists outside of the art room

Why You’ll Love It

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

LOVE THESE GAMES! So far I’ve used the Cantrell and Basquiat lessons. I used this resource as an option for students…who are very nervous in art, this was a godsend!

Some kids chose to play the game, some decided to choose their own from the handout, while others created their own completely. It’s great for inspiration and relived the pressure of choosing for kids that have difficulty with that. Plus playing the game interested the students that are “too cool for school.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a wonderful bundle. My students loved learning about the artists and the work they produced was beautiful. I appreciate the reflection sheets included as well as the learning goals for each unit that can be posted and used by students to self-assess.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I used this product with my students during Black History Month. I am not an art teacher. However, I was able to integrate these projects with different read alouds each week. My students were really engaged and everything was easy to follow! Will definitely use this for years to come!

Students initially believed they could never create something like the examples that were shown in this resource. However, through the very detailed step-by-step instructions, it makes it easier for them to complete and shows them that they can do anything. They are very proud of their work and accomplishments. Fantastic resource! Even though there are only five lessons, the amount of time it takes to have thoughtful discussions around each artist and complete the steps to my students’ level of satisfaction, these lessons will take up a good chunk of our art time for the rest of the year to complete.

Very fun and easy to use. I used these in my general ed. classroom at an art integration school. I haven’t used every artist in this pack yet, but the ones I’ve used have been great. I did have to modify for some of my 2nd graders who are a little less independent or who have a little less fine motor control.

I loved this resource! Great idea to use the dice to have the kids roll to get ideas for creating their art. I love the online spinner as well. Our art creations turned out amazing. I did create a slideshow to go with the activity to give further details about the artist and I found the kids enjoyed learning more and seeing more visuals of the artists’ work. This is an outstanding resource.
