FAQs

Does everyone go to the chapel of rest? ›

Some people may choose not to partake in this experience, especially if they wish to hold onto their very last memories with their loved one. Both decisions are equally valid and it is a personally choice whether you choose to visit the chapel of rest or not.

What is chapel of rest before funeral? ›

A Chapel of Rest is located at a funeral home and is a place where family and friends of the deceased can visit a loved one before their funeral takes place. Many people feel the need to visit their loved one following their death, and the Chapel of Rest offers you a soothing and private space to say goodbye.

How long can a body stay in the chapel of rest? ›

Once the body is dressed, and hair and make-up have been done, the body is placed in the coffin and put in a private viewing room. It can stay there for a day, or longer if required. The longest we've had a body in our chapel is 13 months. A lot of my work is arranging for bodies to go back to their home abroad.

Can you touch a body in the chapel of rest? ›

Can you touch someone in the chapel of rest? When visiting someone in a chapel of rest it's normal to want to hold their hand or touch their hair. Usually this is completely fine unless the funeral director tells you otherwise.

What is the dress code for the chapel of rest? ›

If you are a friend of the deceased, you will need to check with the immediate family before coming to the chapel. Our chapel is open between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. Unless the family has requested, there is no dress code so you can come straight from work, or in your normal clothes.

Is going to the chapel of Rest a good idea? ›

You need to be mindful that seeing a loved one in a chapel of rest can be an overwhelming and emotionally painful experience and it isn't for everyone. You do not need to worry if it isn't something you feel you're unable to do. On the other hand, the chapel of rest can be a way to make peace with your loss.

How is a body prepared for chapel of rest? ›

Embalming dramatically slows down the natural deterioration after death, so it's often recommended if the funeral isn't due to take place right away. This allows you more time to visit your loved one in the chapel of rest or bring them home before the funeral.

Can you stop people going to the chapel of rest? ›

Generally speaking, the decision about who can visit the Chapel of Rest is down to the deceased's family or the person(s) arranging the funeral. Your funeral director will be happy to speak to you about this in more detail.

What to expect when seeing a body chapel of rest? ›

In most cases the atmosphere in the chapel of rest is much more informal than that of a funeral service. The general rule is to behave in a way that the family considers appropriate. Talking in the chapel of rest is quite common; mourners might say a few final words or read a poem.

Do people look different in chapel of Rest? ›

There are visible differences between someone who is embalmed, and someone who is cared for naturally. However, these vary from person to person, and how someone looks after death can also be affected by how they died or by any medication they were on.
